Someone needs to tell the girls.

They are supposed to start calving on March 1st. They’re jumping the gun here.

First & Second Calf

This cow had a calf when I went out at six. She was licking it, and I left them alone. Except for the two dozen other cows in the pen. At seven she was taking care of two calves. I kicked everyone else out of the pen at that point. She is being a good mama, has accepted both calves, and they know what to do. I will keep them separate for a while.

Another cow calved, the clutch went out on my orange pickup, and one of my father-in-law’s heifers at the feedlot had a calf, too. I penned them separately, and they’re doing well. Sometimes, some things work.

Always glad to see those babies. Spring is coming. Take care.

At least they aren’t TOO early. They could have started coming a week or more early. And at least the babies look good.

You have to like that where a set of twins are involved. I was out this morning and my heart skipped a beat when I thought I saw a newborn, we’re not supposed to start for a month yet.

Busy time! Glad mama is doing her job with both of them.

Thought about this some more. Twins often come early. I’d say she did pretty good if March 1 is due day. I bet Mama Cow is glad that gestation is over. Where they were, two is a crowd!!

Brrr…can’t be that time already! And twins off the bat…could be a long spring :) We just got four inches of new snow, can’t even think about calving.

Amen on the brrr comment. Calving time is not my favorite time of year and that is pretty sad because we have calves hitting the ground year around. My wife and I manage our cow herd by a sort benign neglect. We have a closed herd but we know our cows are professionals when it comes to calving. I don’t think I have lost a calf in the past few years.

The grass is really growing down our way. Winter isn’t ready to head out the door just yet, but spring can’t be far away when we have a week like his week. Sunny with highs approaching 70.

This weekend was our valley’s Almond Blossom Festival. It was a great time.

Hope you and the critters are doing fine, stay warm.

I have never seen anything that would look so disgusting. Why do people publish stuff like that? I don’t understand them!
