I'm physically incapable of making a long story short - and I've been making short stories long for years.

I imagine that the blockade was by some irate farmers who organized an effort to keep anyone from selling beets at the price offered. Here in Kentucky at about the same time, they were having "Tobacco Wars" related to the price offered by the big tobacco warehouses. Nationally, it was a time of labor unrest and union organization, and farmers tried to use techniques of collective bargaining etc., too. It's a great old postcard, and it documents an important event of that time in Garden Cityl history. Thanks for sharing it.

Just for the record, the largest or at least one of the largest sugar refineries was at Goodland, Kansas. It was owned by the old Great Western Sugar Comapny. My brother in law was an agriculturist there. That part of the world is HUMID, WINDY and COLD. bonnie

Yes, Andrea - I especially like cards that have been posted - a little more history.

Me, too Three collie - I was amused by what the mother wrote to her son on this one.

Do that Laurie!

Kirk - if there were Volga Russians - there were beets.

Until now, I was not aware they grew beets in Kansas. At least this blog isn't educational in the same way a working in a grocery store is. Working in a grocery store (or perhaps also having to deal with managers at a sugar refinery) tend to teach a person how to cuss. (I am bilingual; I know English and Profanity.)

You don't suppose this picture is of a sugarbeet farmers' revolt? (I'm sure that they got less for their efforts -- even in 2K6 dollars -- than farmers do now. Ain't capitalism wonderful?)

I love the old postcards Karen. I have some that my grandpa sent from Norway (in the 50's) that I really treasure. I think I will ask Santa to bring me a scanner for Christmas so I can share them with the rest of my family.

I love old postcards, especially if there is a message on them. My dad found some of our fairgrounds in about the same era as this one and the difference is amazing.

Karen, do you collect old postcards? My daughter also collects them.

She inherited a nice batch from WWII from my godmother and I try to unearth others whenever I travel.

I found her an old Postcard Album a few years ago which was full of old cards. She loved it.

We particularly hunt for cards that are related to places we've lived or visited.
