Home, sweet home
I was surprised yesterday by an e-mail request for an interview from Chelsea Merz, a radio producer for an NPR show out of Boston. The show was Open Source - Elections ‘06 - Montana Senate.
Of course I was not being interviewed for my political views. I was interviewed about Montana - the place - and on being a Montanan - even if I’m not a native. What we discussed had nothing to do with the show’s topic. You can hear it on the cutting room floor.
Which reminds me of a song. . .
Well things were spinnin’ round me
And all my thoughts were cloudy
And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me
Been in so many places
You know I’ve run so many races
And looked into the empty faces of the people of the night
And something is just not right, ’cause I know
That I gotta get out of here
I’m so alone
Don’t you know that I gotta get out of here
‘Cause New York’s not my home
Though all the streets are crowded
There’s somethin’ strange about it
I lived there half my life and I never once felt at home
I thought I’d make the big time
I learned a lot of lessons awful quick
And now I’m tellin’ you
That they were not the nice kind
And it’s been so long since I have felt fine, that’s the reason
That I gotta get out of here
I’m so alone
That’s the reason that I gotta get out of here
‘Cause New York’s not my home

Too bad they didn’t use the interview. Glad you’re here in Montana!

Excellent interview, you did as well as anyone yet who has tried to put their finger on what makes Montana special.
Like I have told folks many times, I spent six years in the Navy traveling the world only to realize Montana is the only place I want to live.

Karen, good for you! Your voice just popped out of my laptop and I’m maybe 6,000+ miles away on the South Coast of England. I have travelled the US extensively but last year was my first visit to Montana and oh how I cried. How can Montana feel like home to me? I have no relations in America, no ‘connection’ if you will, but touch me, it did and deeply. Maybe it’s in the earth or the air. Well, I’m steeling myself for a return visit next June, got to take a deep breath! Love your blog (oh and your photos on flickr are fab). Bev

The Cutting Room Floor is exactly where that interview didn’t belong.
You are a remarkable lady, Karen. Well done.

Welcome home, Karen. I did wonder if you’d leave…for about 10 seconds. The pics on your site say it all. Thank you for being here. Oh…and I had those dresses and pointy shoes too. What were we theenking???
