I know, I know. . .
I’ve been neglecting the blog. No, I’m not on vacation. Busier than ever - the usual story. I was very fortunate to take in several day trips while Linda was here. It was unbearably hot the entire time - so there were a few places we didn’t attempt. We tried to visit cool spots.
Which were few and far between. August is here and the weather has somehow cooled down a little. The yearling heifers are enjoying the irrigated pasture.
That’s clover blooming, not dandelions going to seed.
They’re fascinated with the horses.
I’ve just realized that the last time they saw horses was trailing home in October.

In the words of that great green philosopher, Kermit D. Frog: “Time’s fun when you’re having flies.”
Remember how fortunate you are to live close to cool spots. (And that you don’t have to dodge 2 million others to get there.)
Here in Kizmai, AZ, we’re having a cold snap: it only got up to 102 today. The problem is that we are in monsoon season (with thunderbumpers, which causes no end of panic attacks for My Massive Mangy Mountain of Mutt), so it ain’t a dry heat anymore. (Although it isn’t quite as humid as Moos’s old stompin’ grounds in beautiful downtown Queens.)
Planning a visit to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado the first week of October. (It’s more or less a 50th birthday gift to myself.) At least by going to the North Rim (which is the place less traveled), I won’t have to listen to Chinese tourists asking, “Do you have anything actually made here?”

Kirk - I had to laugh at the tourist remark. I was at St. V’s for a doctor’s appointment and used the valet parking. They have some major construction going on.While I was standing waiting for my car a car with an older (than me) couple pulled up. The man who was driving asked, “What is it that they’re building?” I said, “I really don’t know.” He turned to the woman in the passenger seat and said disgustedly, “Nobody knows a damn thing around here.” I smiled sweetly and replied, “Maybe I don’t - but I don’t work here either, I’m waiting for my car.”
Thanks Three Collie - August has somehow brought a bit of relief - for a while. . .

Moos, what makes the Chinese tourist question even funnier is that just about everything in the souvenir shops is made…in China. And the Chinese tourist is paying 10 times more for something he could get by staying home.
I always wanted to do a TV story about souvenirs, with a table chock full of junque. The opening line would be, “When people go on a vacation, they feel a need to have something to remember where they’ve been. And so to satisfy that need, an industry has grown up, of priceless objets d’art.” (I would hold up a stuffed roadrunner, saying folks buy lots of these in AZ, thinking they are the state bird. Which they are. Of New Mexico.)
Stay cool,
Kirk & Sheba (along with the stray cat that has somehow gotten in my house, and has resisted any attempts to get him or her out for the past few days)
