Maggie is a dog that was rescued from the pound by my friend. This pretty girl was bitten by a rattlesnake on the Rims today. She is at the vet and they’re doing what they can for her.

Hopefully she’ll learn never to pick a fight with a rattlesnake. And that the SugarBear learns the same lesson (but not in the same way).
It amazes me that dogs like this have to be liberated from the pound. The Humane Society here in Phoenix (which has a marvelous facility for the purpose of finding homes for unwanted pets), has a show on Channel 3 here called “Pets on Parade,” which dispenses news on the Society’s good works (including animal rescues — they told a story today about having to rescue a stray dog who had gotten into one of the canals here and couldn’t get out because the canal banks are very steep and lined with concrete). They also show some of the animals who are available for adoption. Many of them were brought to the shelter because either the owners moved and couldn’t take their pets with them, the pet couldn’t get along with other pets or kids in the family, allergies or that the owners just didn’t have enough time to spend with the pet. (That last one boils my blood — almost as much as people who get upset that some folks would like to take their dogs into a store instead of keeping them in a hot car. Sheba is my family — period. If you don’t like her — and nobody who has met her has failed to fall in love with her — then I don’t like you.)
Hopefully, Maggie will come out of this all right. Sheba and I will be thinking of her.
Kirk (or, as Sheba sometimes thinks of me, “He Who Must Be Ignored”)

The vet called today and said Maggie came thru the night well. They are keeping her in the dog hospital another night, and on medications, but she is eating and drinking, and things are looking well for coming home tomorrow. They are speculating that the snake administered a warning bite without a full load of venom, but going to the vet soon helped as well. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I am sure they helped Maggie last night. Linn

As far as I know, rattlesnake venom isn’t nearly as dangerous for dogs as it is for people. When I was a kid my little beagle got bit . . . . in the groin area . . . . . ouch. He was pretty sick for a few days, but he came out of it alright. We didn’t take him to the vet, we just kept him as cool and comfortable as we could and made sure he had plenty of water. He was a tough little fella though. As far as I know he learned his lesson about rattlers, it was porcupines that he couldn’t seem to stay away from.

Our Airedale once took a bite on the nose from a copperhead. His nose swelled up something fierce. Hubby took him to the country vet who looked at it and said, “Looks like he zigged when he should have zagged.” He gave him some medication and with rest and plenty of water and care he recovered the following day.
I wish Maggie the same recovery and may all your companions heal soon, too.

Oh gosh, I hope all goes well. My husband used to treat them in Texas, and if you got to them soon enough it was usually okay. Thinking about her
