Fort Rockvale Update - Let There Be Music

It’s a go - there will be a band at Fort Rockvale.
Friday, September 30th, 2005 - we’ll meet there for supper at 7 P.M.

If you don’t show - he’ll be looking for you.

Still on the subject of music, I recently saw this musical meme at a couple of blogs - notably Pandora’s and Sam’s. You can find the top 100 Hits of the years 1960 through 2001 at the Music Outfitters site. Scroll all the way down.

Here are my thoughts on the hits of 1975 - the year I escaped High School. The songs that I like(d) are bold. The red songs I could have lived without. Those in blue I never heard, don’t remember - or have blocked from my mind. The ones that I’m neutral about have been left alone.

1. Love Will Keep Us Together, The Captain and Tennille - WHAT?! #1 - that’s disgusting.
2. Rhinestone Cowboy, Glen Campbell - I did like this song when the strolling Italian guitarist at Ponte’s would play it. As a matter of fact, I requested it all the time. But there was alcohol involved.
3. Philadelphia Freedom, Elton John

that man has a very large gun :)

  2. Pandora Says:

Michael Murphy’s “Wildfire” was a great song!

BTW–Do you know what band will be playing at Ft. Rockvale? It would be cool if it could be the 7th Avenue Band…I’m one of their groupies!

  3. Bonita Says:

I thought I loved music - you REALLY do!

  4. Anonymous Says:

Whatever band is playing, we will have to send a copy of your likes and dislikes ahead of time so they can be prepared. Linn

The thing is, you can still hear most of these songs getting heavy play today–in TV commercials. (Somehow, I doubt hawking Cadillacs was what Led Zepplin had in mind. But then–as John Lennon once famously sang before he gave a bad autograph to Mark David Chapman–”Nobody told me there’d be days like these.”)

The sad thing is I had to listen to these tunes on Phoenix radio, which was then–and remains to this very day, I can assure you–on of the great oxymorons of all times.

Kirk (with Sheba howling in derision in the background)

  6. Steve Says:

This is proof that disco was the beginning of the end of Western Civilaizatiom. I am so ashamed and hope that my children never learn of my culpability.

I think that I even play a few on the list that I don’t like. Why is it that we know all the words to songs we can’t stand? And then those lyrics get stuck in your head and they won’t leave. No matter how hard you try to get rid of them. . .

L - I think he used to hold a tire or was a muffler man in a previous life or something like that. This incarnation he’s protecting the fort.

Pandora - they didn’t know who - but said that there would be a band. Hmmm… this could prove interesting. Everybody polka!

Bonita - Huh?! I do, too. Just none of these!

Linn - Oh, I’m not so hard to please. As long as people are having fun & happy, so am I. Unless - they’re happy & having fun abusing me.

Kirk - Since we’re about the same age - we suffered through much of the same music. You know what bothers me? When you hear “an oldies” station on the radio - and they’re playing golden oldies from the 1980’s. To me an oldies staion should be playing do-wop music. But then, I guess, I’m an oldie.

Steve - I spent that era in NYC - and wouldn’t step foot in Studio 54. I did haunt the Other End, Max’s Kansas City, CBGBs, Folk City, the old Limelight, and other vague memories. Proving again, that I am an oldie. Was there actually a “disco scene” in Montana?

You know what’s scary, Moos? I still have a lot of my albums from that period–being a bit of a pack rat (rodentus collectivis).

On 8-track. (I have a stereo that plays the things still–I tried to sell it and the tapes at a rubbish–I mean rummage–sale several years ago. No takers.)

I wonder if the gentleman pictured can see from Rockvale to Mesa using the scope on that rifle?

Another scary thought: the local oldies giant here in Phoenix, KOOL-FM (which is similcast to many “oldies” stations around the country as the station is one of the 100 billion stations owned by Clear Channel Communications) is not only playing music from the 70s and 80s, but also from the early 90s!!!!!! (The exclamation points are inserted in honor of Ed Kemmick–whether he wants them or not.)

    Kirk (Sheba’s still howling…)

Hey, how can anybody not like “Another somebody done somebody wrong song”? The Equinox came with extreme radio and there were whole stations that played only music from the 40’s or the 50’s or the 60’s. Now those are really oldies! I decided, tho, that I can live without that luxury! So now I am just listening to the done wrong songs. bonnie

  10. KarbonKountyMoos Says:

    Kirk - our kids can start a howling quartet. 8 tracks - wow - I dumped my ex’s (8 tracks) years ago. . .

Oh Bonnie - why did you do that?! I’ll be singing and/or humming that ditty all day. I, of course, know all the words.

  11. Anonymous Says:

Word has it that somebody called Paul Anka’s house one day, and asked if Paul was there.

The reply: “I’m sorry, Anka’s away.”
    (ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!)

Actually, Paul Anka is still at it after all these years, even though he’s older than Mick Jagger (which is saying something; I just don’t know what). His latest CD is a collection of covers of grunge songs done in a Big Band style. They don’t sound too bad, but then, IMNSHO, they didn’t have anywhere to go but up. (There was a 6.0 tremor felt in Seattle recently, but it turned out it was just Kurt Cobain doing 360s in his grave.)

And Moos, be careful about slamming oldies–Major Dan doesn’t like slurs on his playlists. ;)

Kirk (whose ears are beginning to hurt from Sheba’s dirisive howling–even though it’s better than anything on the radio these days)

Karen, I hope you have had a great “done somebody wrong day.” You could be like me. I have had one line going through my head all day. It goes something like this: “I get tears in my ears as I lie on my back in my bed while I cry over you.” I don’t know if this is part of a song or just something we made up as kids? Anyway, I am tired of it. bonnie

  13. Rocky Smith Says:

You don’t remember “I’m not Lisa” ? You are so lucky! I’m still trying to forget that one!
