Moos Anniversary

I began this blog one year ago.
Knowing that people stop here to visit makes it worthwhile. I’ve enjoyed blogging - and your feedback. I hope that you have fun here, too.

This unused card was discovered in Chicago by my brother, John. He claims that he was searching for Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, but found Elsie instead. Discriminating taste doesn’t run in our family - it gallops. The card will open in a larger window - just click on it.

ELSIE THE COW
and her BRAND NEW TWINS

Elsie the Cow is the traveling representative of Borden’s family of fine foods.

The back has more information:

1957
ELSIE and her TWINS IN PERSON

Elsie is in her canopied bed, the twins in their double sized playpen. For the little ones there’s a twin-sized bassinet for nighttime and a two seater rocking horse for playtime. For Elsie, there’s a library complete with antique victrola. Favorite albums - “Moo-in Over Miami”, “Cow Cow Boogie”, and “Jersey Bounce”. Favorite books - “The Farmer With Cold Hands”, “Calves or Career”, “How to Live on 5,000 Quarts a Year”. Elsie’s quite proud of her cowsmetics table made from her grandmother’s milking stanchion. Favorite necessities - “Meadow Mud Pack”, “Tail Wave Set”, “Eau de New Mown Hay”. Elsie’s unique Barn Boudoir, housed within a 35 foot trailer, closes into a comfortably compact unit for traveling.

For 100 years folks have been saying, “If it’s Borden’s, it’s got to be good!”

In the famous words of Kermit D. Frog: “Time’s fun when you’re having flies.”

I’m sure that to celebrate this momentous anniversary, The SugarBear will eat a slice of the sofa. (With the encouragement of her “brothers” Ty & Lucky, no doubt. Dogs are like that.)

Thought I’d comment a bit on the pictorial subject at hand, and perhaps start a wave of blood-curdling nostalgia as well.

Seeing the Borden’s postcard made me think about something which may well be extinct these days–the local dairy. Growning up in Billings in the 1960s (some of you may have thought that if I just said “the 60s,” you might have been tempted to think I was referring to the 1860s), I recall the Jersey dairy on Poly Drive (which was across from a mom-and-pop grocery store that later became a Kon’s–I’m not sure what it is now) about three blocks west of Virginia Lane. (Jersey was a “Quality Checked” outfit, at the time.)

I also remember the old Thompson’s Dairy, which was on either North 24th or 25th Street near Cobb Field. (Thompson’s was easy to spot, because one of the buildings was in the shape of a milk carton.)

When I would visit my paternal grandparents in Sidney, I would often pass the Gate City Dairy on East Main Street.

Sadly, all three are gone now, replaced by chains from out of state.

When we lived in Spokane for 9 months in 1969-70, the house we rented was about three blocks away from DairyGold’s plant on East Francis Ave.

And the first time I moved to Phoenix (in 1974–when I went to a tech school and learned to “always leave the party before they ask you to”), the Carnation Dairy was at Central and Indian School and had a restaurant attched that served the best ice cream in town. (The dairy plant is still there; the restaurant, sadly, is not.)

Here in the Phoenix metro area, a lot of the dairy farms around Chandler are being forced out of business because neighboring farms have been sold to real estate developers, who then subdivide the farms to make housing developments. The suckers…I mean, buyers of these new homes get very upset when the wind blows the aromas of the remaining farms their way. (Sound familiar?)

Kirk (who in his old age became lactose intolerant and has to cut back on sugar–cane or beet–because of Type 2 Diabetes; getting old is Hell)
