Keeping Busy

We’ve started combining. This is a problem since our bins are full of grain from last year’s harvest. Because of a glut of cheap corn, and so much malt barley not making the grade, we’ve been sitting on our feed barley. Which was probably one of the best harvests that we had. It doesn’t do us much good if we can’t sell it. We are still trying to line up truckers to take it to a feedlot. Right now, all the grain truckers are busier than ever, too. The alfalfa is almost ready for second cutting. Everything else is being irrigated.

I made a quick trip to Red Lodge yesterday morning. To the doctor.
I’m supposed to be keeping my leg up and iced.
Yeah.
Sure.
Okay.
Right.

On Saturday evening, we sorted seven pairs from the “uncalved” dries. We were moving them to the pasture across the road. We do this on foot. Our cattle are accustomed to us. Most of them are gentle and okay with us walking through them. Two of the calves needed to be tagged, so we brought them all into a cutting pen. I pushed two cows with three calves into a small alleyway. I had the two calves that we needed to eartag. We were packed tight by three gates and a loading chute. I told the Baron, “Why don’t we kick these cows out - they’re really kicking.”
Famous last words. . .
Did he listen? Yes.
Did he agree with me? No.
Did he get kicked?
No. Enough said.
Yesterday I thought that maybe I should have it looked at -
by someone other than me.
I’ll live. But now I have two bum legs.

    Aww moos! Hope your leg(s) get(s) better :( .

I read your posts and think to myself “This is why i don’t do livestock or agriculture…”

Owww! Take a break when you can, and put it up. Maybe the Baron should be fixing meals while you recuperate!

Sounds like you have lots of luck lately, most of it bad. Wish I could loan you a grain bin for a while. We hauled the last of ours to the elevator yesterday. Coors was having mechanical difficulties as well as long lines so we binned some to keep the combines going a couple of weeks ago.

We keep getting these little thunder showers and are having a hard time finishing the second cutting of hay. We got some of it in good shape but are still going to have to try for more “horse hay” next cutting.

Sure hope your new bum leg gets better fast. bonnie

Your post always remind me of when I was a little girl. This picture brought back the story of my spanking from Grandpa. I say spanking in the singular b/c it only happened once. Our combine had a “passenger” seat that I proudly took next to my dad during harvet. It flipped down next to his and that’s where I rode.

Now the rest of the story has all been retold to me b/c I actually don’t remember it. Long story short…it was getting late, Grandpa was taking the truck into the elevator and it was to be my trip home. Dad let me out, I stood in the middle of the wheat field and proceeded in my 4 or 5 year old self to throw a tantrum b/c i wanted to stay. Grandpa argued for a while, gave up, smacked me across the bottom and I came with in the truck. Story goes, I stood up on the floor of the truck the whole way to town. I never argued with Grandpa again! :)

    Thanks everyone.

Levi - I’ll live - I considered stopping for coffee while I was in RL - but didn’t know if you’d be working.

Montannie - Ha! We don’t have enough bologna.

Bonnie - Yes, Murphy’s law has been in force lately. We’ve been getting those afternoon showers, too.

Bitterroot - As you can see, I haven’t had my leg up much.

    Linn - I’m trying but it isn’t working. . .

Pandora - I’ve been kicked before, and stomped a couple of times. I’d imagine it won’t be the last time - but this was an extra OW.

Bonita - I started breaking down right after we were married. Poor guy - I guess that he should have checked my teeth first - or something. For a while he threatened to take me to NAPA.

Moosekahl - Great story - isn’t it funny how we hear those stories so much we remember them?

    Rachel - I’m trying - really.
