I have the same view out of my front door... except harvest started Monday.

I'm from Iowa originally, lived here in Texas for 25 years, and it still amazes me the difference in the growing season.

Weese - One thing that drives me crazy (of the many) is when you watch people pulling the husks off corn in a store or at a farmstand. Grrrr...

When the ears have started to fill, keep a close eye on them. I'm sure that you have raccoons nearby. Once the husks start to dry and lose a bit of the green - they're usually good to go!

I like to soak them - husk on in cold water for at least an hour - which helps evict bugs, too. The I put them on the grill to steam. Our sweet corn is just starting to tassel - so it'll be a while here before we'll be enjoying any.

Oh, I DID feel the quake! Watching the TV news, my armchair seemed to shake a bit -- very odd sensation.

It was my second quake. First one, in 1983 or 1984. I was in the law school library, reading at a table, and the windows began to rattle, and the pendant lamps began to swing. The librarian came tearing out of a back room, yelling "Earthquake! Get out!" We went and stood on the lawn for a couple minutes.

Frankly, I'm glad I can count the number of earthquakes I've experienced on two fingers.

Montannie - Thanks! Yes, plus a bit of rain. But we didn't feel the earthquake last night. How about you?

David - Cute isn't always the first word that comes to mind. . .

Bonnie - Yes, Blake sure raised some good pups - cute (obviously) with a touch of ornery! Ahhh - malt barley - the smell of money going into the bank. To pay for fuel and fertilizer! Ours is feed barley - and not quite ready. We had a short trip yesterday afternoon to Park City. Saw lots of combines working.

Mr. HK - Yes, we both are. My husband didn't notice the shirt either. . .

Diva - Too many hectic mornings, days &#38; evenings. Coffee sure doesn't hurt.

L - Thanks! The only thing I don't like about the corn there - when it gets so high you can't see the lane.

Kirk - Sheba is so lucky to have you - and I'm sure that you are to have her. It's unfortunate what some animals go through at the hands of <I>humans</I>. Sugarbear has begun some home improvements that I'm not happy about. I wish that I had a bit of her energy. Lucky has decided that she likes her now - in small doses. But when she "babysits" she cleans Sugar's ears until her head is soggy. Ty wants to be left alone. Rocky (the cat) wants to leave the county. I'd imagine that it would be very difficult to add another dog to your household. Sheba knows that she has it good and doesn't want to share you.

Days such as this (and don't worry, we <B>all</B> have them) remind me of one of the better pieces of philosphy from that wise old baseball man, Charles Dillon Stengel (a/k/a, "Casey"):

<I>"There comes a time in everyone's life--and I've had plenty of them."</I>

When asked how he felt on his 75th birthday, Casey snapped back, "How the hell would I know? Most folks my age are dead at the present time." (Perhaps he wouldn't have been so cranky if he were able to look out his window at the Beartooth's every morning, knowing he'd see a wonderful sunset in the evening to boot.)

Moos, while the Sugarbear can be a handful, be thankful she doesn't gnaw her way through wall paneling (I have far more toothpicks than I'll ever need) or go through plate-glass windows in a panic for no reason. The stories I could tell about my crazed canine would make you wonder why I bother. But when she's calmed down (and especially when I'm around is when she's calm), she's the joy of my life (even if she did turn her nose up on every single dog I tried to get her to know when we went to the Humane Society to get her a companion last week).

Ugh, I have mornings like that entirely too often. More coffee is definitely the answer.
