Gated Pipe - Lesson 1

Pipe Trailer Behind the Mule
Here the Sugar Beet Baron is backing the trailer up to one of the gated pipe stacks. The stack on the left side is 10″ pipe. On the right is 12″ pipe. They’re 30′ lengths.

Loaded Pipe Trailer
We’ve loaded some gated pipe. He’s putting a metal pipe on the side of the trailer to keep the load from rolling. There are two of these on either side of the trailer. Note the hitch on the back of the trailer. It has hitches on both ends.

Kawasaki Mule
Here’s the hitch attached to the 4 wheeler. We’re in the beet field now. For now we’re just dropping the pipe in the field.

Behind the Wheel
This is my view.

Behind Me
And the view behind me. We drop the pipe, and go back for more. We started with the 12″ pipe and then load up the 10″ and do the same. Once all the pipe is set up, we go back to the field and put it together.

That stuff is heavy, especially the 12 inch. When it is half full of mud, it is really heavy!

Our troop is stacking gated pipe and picking up tubes and dams from the barley fields. Jim is closing ditches. Harvest is still a few days away but it won’t be long now. bonnie

I remember driving the little A tractor while setting out pipe. That was before I got the job “in town”. :-) We always had three people…two to get the pipe off the trailer and one (me) to drive. My husband when to move some pipe the other day. When he picked it up, he noticed it was extra heavy on one end. So he went over to look inside and saw the tail of a skunk sticking out! Luckily he didn’t get sprayed. I never liked that part of the job…wondering what you will find inside the “empty” pipe!

Every now and then, a coon will rip a batch of gates out of the pipe, trying to get at the craw dads that are inside the pipe in the water. I have always wondered how they know they are in there? Lots of times when we pull the plug at the end to try and clean out the mud as we finish with the pipe, a batch of them come out in varying states of “health.” bonnie
