One was a fellow who had a pet snake (I don't know which kind--I just know it wasn't poisonous and it was medium sized). He would feed the slithering reptile crickets most of the time, but would on occaision bring home a live rat for him to devour whole. When this occurred, I made it a point not to be anywhere near the room, since the rat was fully aware he was the main course at the time. (As I have mentioned before, my mother--God Rest Her Soul--was afraid of all reptiles. I, on the other hand, had no problem with geckos, iguanas and other lizards. But snakes, to be honest, give me a heavy-duty case of the heebie-jeebies. However, the other roommate--an otherwise normal young lady--found the rat feeding absoultely fascinating. Go figure.) That having been said, one of my favorite "Far Side" cartoons was one of a snake with a huge bulge in his body. A new tenant discovered a huge snake skin shedding in the living room one morning. Apparently the former tenant had a huge - like 12 foot long - exotic snake for a pet. It liked to sleep in the air ducts during the day, and the old tenant couldn't catch it so left it. Imagine renting a nice downtown apt and sharing it with a big snake unknowingly. My uncles caught it and put it out. They didn't kill it, though. For years two of them (black snakes, not my uncles) lived in the lawnmower shed. Sometimes they were hanging from the rafters.
