Talbott Photo Post Cards of Wyoming

Both of these are unused real photo post cards. The images are crisp. Something to be said for those old big negatives.

Black Tunnels, Wind River Canyon
I wonder who the car belonged to. Too bad the train wasn’t there at the time.

Ten Sleep Canyon in Big Horn Mountains, Black and Yellow Trail
Is it the shadow of the car on the lower right? I wouldn’t want to meet someone on this narrow road.

I took a trip through this canyon several years ago — it was a spectacular drive. The “new” road isn’t quite as narrow as the postcard’s depiction, but it was still a challenge for a scaredy-cat driver.

Oh, yes… the old “Contact negatives” I think they were called… Giant things… And people would write on them in grease pencil and then they could be later printed at any size… including postcard size…

    Those were the days…

Karen, thanks for sharing all these great pics.

Karen, those fellows that were here from Iowa came west over Powder River Pass (Ten Sleep Canyon) but when they went back east they drove clear to Billings to avoid going back over that road. To those of us who live here, it is so much better than it used to be that we don’t even think about it, we just go when we need or want to. bonnie

I think the new road is so much better! We had to go over that in a severe snowstorm one Christmas. Something I hope we NEVER do again!

I was telling my family about the Wind River Tunnels. They did not believe me until they saw the post card.

As always, thank you for the familiar places of ‘HOME’.

Left home at 5:30 this morning for a parts run to Riverton. Paid extra attention to the tunnels in Wind River Canyon. About 10 years ago, they really worked the highway tunnels over–easy for us to remember as the boss went through in an ambulance to Casper and they shut things down to let the ambulance through. The rail road tunnels seem to be original. Surely not but some of the wood at the entrances is OLD. Looking at them today, it is hard to believe that some of the stuff that is on the rail cars actually comes through those tunnels, but it must. I am thinking of the airplane bodies that we see headed north on the tracks every now and then. bonnie

I think that I have a few more “newer” cards depicting the Wind River tunnels. I’ll have to find them. I always get a kick out of those airplane bodies on flatbeds that I see on the highway & the truck scales/weigh station at Laurel.
