Hooray!
The last of the Q & A - from the lovely Linn!
1. Can you tell us an FBI story?
My first case involved going thru a 3 gallon container of dead maggots looking for hair or fiber. When I began working for them, the laboratory was still on the top of the Dept. of Justice building where the a/c and storage space were non-existent. It was late spring, and the sun beat down on my desk thru the slanted windows over me, making it the most miserable job. Finally, needing a break from the heat and the putrid mess I was working with, I pushed my chair back and it banged into something. I stood up, and turned to see my chair had bumped into an open pine box containing a decomposed skeleton. At that moment, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I didn’t have to work on the body, but I was later invited to the roof of the building, due to lack of ventilation, to watch when an expert from the Smithsonian Institute came over to examine it. And so it went. For every awful thing I worked on, a truly memorable experience followed that seemed to balance it out.
Or will you have to kill us?
I have held the gun Patty Hearst used in the famed bank robbery, along with some of the old Mafia guns in the FBI’s collection, peered down the barrels of countless (unloaded) guns for hairs and fibers, but never actually fired a gun.
2. How many places have you lived?
Conceived in Boston, Born at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, Riverside, CA, Fort Collins, CO, Waco, TX, Bainbridge, GA, Mountain Home, Idaho, Rapid City, SD, Cheyenne, WY, Manistique, MI, Anaconda, MT, Hamilton, MT, Bozeman, MT, Leadville, CO, Alexandria, VA, Arlington, VA, and at age 23 moved to Laurel, MT and stayed.
Which was your favorite and why?
Leadville, CO (elevation around 10,800) – waking up and seeing the snow covered majestic mountains of the High Rockies year-round.
3. What kind of music do you enjoy the most?
Anything my sons play on their guitars. I have come to enjoy Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, and others like They Might Be Giants as those were who my sons listened to a lot. I also enjoy live big bands, and orchestra. Least liked – anything by AFI.
4. What is Atlanta like this time of year?
Surprisingly, the weather wasn’t so far off from here right now. I was also surprised by the number of pine trees outside of town in the wooded areas.
What was your impression of the airport there?
Don’t get me started. We were delayed getting into Atlanta, and delayed getting out, causing an unexpected night stay in Denver Sunday.
The restaurants?
One night we ate at a restaurant called Bridgetown across from the Fox Theatre downtown Atlanta. It had Jamaican food. Very good.
5. Laurel, Montana - tell us something that would surprise us about the place.
With a population of 6,700, Laurel is the 13th largest incorporated city in the State of Montana. And it is the only incorporated city of this size that is not a county seat, which puts Laurel in a unique spot as part of the largest county in Montana.

Karen, thanks so much for the interview meme! The five who first commented on my blog have all answered their questions, and hopefully we can say, “and so on, and so on…” This was really great, and I appreciate your tagging me!

“My first case involved going through a 3-gallon container of dead maggots looking for hair or fiber.” Now there’s a great opening line for a novel.

Hi Linn: Anything else about Laurel you’d be willing to share? What’s the mentality of the place? Is the fireworks show really as spectacular as I’ve heard? etc…:-)
