What’s Wrong With This Picture?

I read this story in today’s dead tree edition of the Billings Gazette. Congratulations to Josiah Hamilton! I was glad to see that he had his water bottle in his hands. If you read the on-line story and click on the photo to enlarge, you’ll see what I saw. Why aren’t the participants in the Spelling Bee required to pick up after themselves?
Which immediately reminded me of this story from yesterday’s Gazette. This is what bothered me:
Audience members during Thursday night’s Carrot Top show took full advantage of the new policy, drinking plenty of plastic cups of beer. The cups, many of which were left scattered across the floor around the seats, added to the chore of cleaning up on Friday, but the added revenue from concessions more than balanced out the cost of cleanup, Fisher said.
Why are we unable to take care of our own litter?

That is a big pet peeve of mine! I can’t stand when I am around people who are unable to take their trash to the can… usually this happens in movie theaters, but I have seen it in the mall, in the library, and sadly most of all, on campus of my college. I think it is a herd mentality thing, you know there are people paid to clean it up, you see that there is already trash there, so somehow, it becomes ok (even though it is not ok!).

Lazy, nothing more, nothing less.
My pet peeve in this vein? Slobs who can’t/won’t pick up after themselves in the break room at work.

I agree. Everyone should pick up their own trash and EVERY public place should have a recepticle for trash. One of our local rest stops has NO trash can so it is always littered with paper cups, pop cans and even used diapers. I guess the powers that be think that if they provide hot air dryers instead of paper towels, there is no need for a can? bonnie

What can you expect of a crowd that pays to see Carrot Top. Don’t those spelling bee kids have handlers to clean up after them?
I’m with Randy. There is always someone who leaves their dirty coffee mugs in the break room. Who do they think is going to wash them?

I am sooo on-board with this.
How is it ok to leave stuff behind - anywhere, under any circumstances?

So, what exactly are children being taught? That it is not their responsibility to pick up after themselves?
